Let \(\theta\) be an inner function in the unit disk \(\mathbb D\) (\(\theta\) holomorphic in \(\mathbb D\) with \(|\theta|=1\) a.e on \(\partial\mathbb D\)). Consider the classical Hardy spaces \(H^p\) and their subspaces \(K_\theta^p:= H^p\cap \theta \overline{H^p_0}\), \(p\geq 1\). Here \(H^p_0=z H^p\). Alternatively, \(K_\theta^p=\{f\in H^p\;:\;\tilde f\in H^p\}\), where \(\tilde f=\overline{zf}\theta\). This paper gives several fine results in the same spirit: if \(f\in K_\theta^1\) can be factorised as \(f=gh\), where \(f\in H^p\) and \(h\in H^\infty\) is ``close'' to \(\theta\), in the sense that the ratio \(h/\theta\) -- or maybe just its projection onto \(L^2\ominus H^2\) -- is suitably smooth, then \(f\) enjoys improved integrability conditions (it is smaller than one would a priori expect). For instance (Theorem 1.1), if \(h/\theta\) satisfies the Lipschitz or Zygmund condition of order \(\alpha\) (\(\alpha<1/p\)) then \(f\in H^r\), with \(r=p/(1-\alpha p)\), this last exponent being sharp. Special results are obtained when \(h\) is a divisor of the inner factor of \(f\), and specifically, when \(\theta\) is an interpolating Blaschke product. The case \(\alpha\geq 1/p\) is dealt with in Theorems 1.6 and 1.7: if \(\alpha>1/p\) the ``partner''\(\tilde f\) of \(f\in K_\theta^1\) must be in \[ A^\beta:=\Big\{ f\in H(\mathbb D)\, :\, \sup_{z\in\mathbb D} |f^{(n)}(z)| (1-|z|)^{n-\beta}<\infty\Big\}, \] \(\beta=\alpha-1/p\), \(n=[\alpha]+1\), while in case \(\alpha=1/p\) this remains true provided the space \(A^\beta\) is replaced by BMOA, the analytic subspace of \(\mathrm{BMO}(\mathbb T)\). The paper also discusses and establishes appropriate norm estimates. It is a substantial contribution to a much studied subject.
