The authors note that the mass transference principle proven by \textit{V. Beresnevich} and \textit{S. Velani} [Ann. Math. (2) 164, No. 3, 971--992 (2006; Zbl 1148.11033)] is useful for inferring Hausdorff measure statements for lim sup sets of balls in \(\mathbb R^n\) from a priori weaker Lebesgue measure statements. Also, the following investigations are presented: ``In the present paper, we prove a considerably more general form of the mass transference principle which extends known results of this type in several distinct directions. In particular, we establish a mass transference principle for lim sup sets defined via neighbourhoods of sets satisfying a certain local scaling property. Such sets include self-similar sets satisfying the open set condition and smooth compact manifolds embedded in \(\mathbb R^n\). Furthermore, our main result is applicable in locally compact metric spaces and allows one to transfer Hausdorff \(g\)-measure statements to Hausdorff \(f\)-measure statements. We conclude the paper with an application of our mass transference principle to a general class of random lim sup sets.'' In this paper, a brief survey is devoted to the mass transference principle and its generalizations. Applications of these statements are described. In addition, new possible applications of the main result (Theorem 1) of this article to explore, are discussed. The attention is given to the local scaling property. Some examples of sets satisfying this property are given. Connections between the local scaling property and box counting dimension and Minkowski content are considered. Some well known facts and notions from geometric measure theory are given. Several auxiliary statements which are useful for proving the main result are proven. The proof of Theorem 1 is explained including a strategy. In addition, to deduce the Hausdorff dimension and measure of some random lim sup sets, this theorem is used.
