Let \(g:[0,\infty)\rightarrow \mathbb{R}\) be a locally Hölder continuous function and let \(\kappa\in (0,\infty)\), \(\alpha\in (1,\infty)\). The authors study the behavior of ground states of the problem \(-\Delta u-\kappa\,\Delta(|u|^\alpha)|u|^{\alpha-2}u=g(u)\) in \(\mathbb{R}^N\) \ (\(N\geq 3\)), \(u\in X:=\{u\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)\}: \int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|\nabla u|^2|u|^{2\alpha-2}dx<\infty\}\), as \(\kappa \rightarrow 0\). Under the following conditions on the nonlinearity \(g\): - \(-\infty <\liminf_{s\rightarrow 0}\frac{g(s)}{s}\leq \limsup_{s\rightarrow 0}\frac{g(s)}{s}<0\), - \(\lim_{s\rightarrow \infty}\frac{g(s)}{s^p}=1\) for some \(p\in \left]\frac{N-2}{N+2},\frac{(2\alpha-1)N+2}{N-2}\right)\), - \(\sup_{s\in (0,\infty)}\int_0^sg(t)dt>0\), the authors prove that, for each \(\kappa>0\), the problem admits a ground state \(w_\kappa\) which is of class \(C^2\) in \(\mathbb{R}^N\), positive, radially symmetric and decreasing with respect to \(r=|x|\). Then the authors prove the existence of a positive and radially symmetric ground state \(\hat{w}_0\in D^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^N)\) for the zero-mass equation \(-\Delta u-\Delta(|u|^\alpha)|u|^{\alpha-2}u=u^{p-1}\) in \(\mathbb{R}^N\) and establish the following asymptotic behavior of the ground state \(w_k\): \[ \hat{w}_\kappa\rightarrow \hat{w}_0\, \text{ in}\, C^2(\mathbb{R}^N)\cap D^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^N) \] (up to a subsequence) as \(\kappa\rightarrow 0\), where \[ \hat{w}_\kappa(x)=\kappa^{\frac{1}{2(\alpha-1)}}w_\kappa(\kappa^{\frac{p-1}{4(\alpha-1)}}x). \] In particular, they obtain that the ground state \(w_\kappa\) blows up as \(\kappa\rightarrow 0\). The existence of ground states is proved by means of variational methods which the authors apply to a dual formulation of the problem having a variational structure. Some uniform estimates for the rescaled ground state \(\hat{w}_\kappa\) are also established to prove the above asymptotic behavior of \(w_\kappa\).
