Among other important results the author shows that the set of Dixmier traces is properly larger than the set of Connes-Dixmier traces. This result answers a question posed by \textit{A. L. Carey} and \textit{F. A. Sukochev} [Russ. Math. Surv. 61, No. 6, 1039--1099 (2006); translation from Usp. Mat. Nauk 61, No. 6, 45--110 (2006; Zbl 1151.46053)]. The arguments are based on shift-invariant functionals on a suitably chosen sequence space. The last two sections have interesting considerations on medium-sized subspaces of Banach spaces and positive traces.
