Given \(M\), a closed hypersurface \(M\) in a rank-1 symmetric space \(\tilde{M}\), the author provides an upper bound for \(\lambda _1(M)\), the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian on \(M\). It is equal to the integral over \(M\) of the sum of two terms: the Ricci curvature of \(\tilde{M}\) and the squared norm of \(A(r)\), the second fundamental form of the geodesic sphere which is centered at the center of mass \(p_0\) of the mass ditribution \(t\mapsto 1/t\) and has radius \(r = d(x, p_0)\) (\(x\in M\)). It occurs to be sharp in the following sense: the equality holds for geodesic spheres centered at \(p_0\) (and only for them).
