A direct method is presented for computing the nonlinear stiffness in geometric nonlinear vibration of thin shells discretized by the finite element method. Analytical expressions of the nonlinear coupling coefficients are expressed in terms of the internal elastic energy by using a modal expansion for the displacement. These formulas are implemented in a finite element code within the framework of MITC shell elements (mixed interpolation of tensorial components). The method gives fast and reliable computations for these coefficients, the accuracy of the method is validated by the comparison with an indirect method. The procedure is illustrated on a hyperbolic paraboloid panel. Bifurcation diagrams in free, forced and damped vibrations are obtained.
