A theory of formations of soluble Lie algebras, analogous to the theory for finite groups, is developed. For the most part, this is a straight-forward translation from group theory. The principal differences are that the analogue of the Lubeseder theorem does not hold, and that in the case of a ground field of characteristic \(p>0\), the conjugacy theorems are only proved under the additional assumption that the intersection of the terms of the descending central series of the algebra satisfies the \((p-1)\)-st Engel condition. The theory is trivial for an algebraically closed ground field of characteristic 0, as the only saturated homomorphs are the 0, the nilpotent algebras, and all soluble algebras.
