The paper discusses the possibility of propagation Rayleigh waves propagation in an initially stressed incompressible half space under a rigid layer. The velocity equation has been derived and it has been shown that such waves cannot propagate in an isotropic medium without tensile initial stress. Further, it has been observed that under certain circumstances instead of one Rayleigh wave two such waves are possible. The numerical calculations for the velocities have been carried out and the results are compared with those of free boundary case. This paper is a unique attempt to explain mathematically the non-seismocity of some regions and possibility of occurrence of two Rayleigh wave fronts from the source without reflection under certain conditions.
