Pickup trucks and Sport/Utility vehicles were eliminated due\Nto incomplete information in the _Consumer Reports_ source. Duplicate\Nmodels (e.g., Dodge Shadow and Plymouth Sundance) were listed at most\Nonce.\N\NA similar dataset for 1989 model cars appeared as one of the sample\Ndatasets shipped with the _Student Edition of Execustat_ (PWS-KENT\N1990).\N\NFurther description can be found in the "Datasets and Stories" article\N"1993 New Car Data" in the _Journal of Statistics Education_ (Lock 1993).\NSend the message\N\Nsend jse/v1n1/datasets.lock\N\Nto the address archive@jse.stat.ncsu.edu\N\NPEDAGOGICAL NOTES:\NThis is a multi-purpose dataset that can be used at many points in an\Nintroductory course. It includes many good numeric variables and\Nseveral options for dividing the cars up into groups. Students tend to\Nbe familiar with most of the variables (and specific car models). They\Ncan anticipate and pose explanations for many of the relationships to\Nbe found in the data, although some surprises may be encountered. One\Ncan easily find examples of pairs of variables that demonstrate strong\Nor weak, positive or negative associations. PRICE and MPG variables\Ntend to be popular choices as "dependent" variables. Basic graphs will\Noften reveal unusual data values (like the price for a Mercedes-Benz).\N\NREFERENCES:\NLock, R. H.
