The inhibition constant defines the substrate concentration at which inhibition of bacterial growth begins to appear. It marks the highest concentration where the Monod relation between growth rate and substrate concentration remains valid. Above this level, additional substrate reduces rather than enhances growth. A large inhibition constant indicates weak inhibition, while a small one indicates strong inhibition.
