We show that piecewise polynomial approximations used in surface finite element methods exhibit better-than-expected performance for even polynomial orders. The key to this is cancellation of leading interpolation errors on suitably structured meshes arising from refinement processes, improving weighted estimates for functions, derivatives and geometric quantities.
