We develop a high-order surface finite element method using intersections with ambient tetrahedral meshes for elliptic equations on smooth surfaces implicitly defined by level-set functions; this novel approach combines surface FEM and unfitted methods to yield conforming spaces from background geometry, with provable stability and error estimates.
