We present an algorithm for calculating the preimage of a product of matrices through affine spaces in a compositional fashion, with applications to inverse and adjoint automatic differentiation. Our method allows non-square matrices corresponding to swelling and shrinking active variables during computation, generalizing the conventional inverse problem.
