We develop a finite element method for the Grad--Mercier equation, a model for magnetic equilibria whose source depends on the global rank of a flux function. The main contribution is the development of an equivalent clipped, nonnegative rank law that preserves the full mass of tied levels, yielding a strictly convex discrete energy and unique finite element equilibrium.
