The authors use left and right norm derivatives \[\rho'_\pm(x,y)=\lim_{\lambda\to 0^{\pm}}\frac{\|x+\lambda y\|^2-\|x\|^2}{2\lambda}\] to introduce the mapping \(\rho'=(\rho'_++\rho'_-)/2)\) and to define the \(\rho\)-orthogonality \(\perp_\rho\) by \(x\perp_\rho y\Leftrightarrow\rho'(x,y)=0\). It is shown that a real normed linear space endowed with the \(\rho\)-orthogonality relation, in general need not be an orthogonality space in the sense of \textit{J. Rätz} [Aequationes Math. 28, 35--49 (1985; Zbl 0569.39006)]. They investigate \(\rho\)-orthogonally additive mappings defined on some particular real normed linear spaces. They also study mappings which are approximately additive under the condition of an approximate orthogonality.
