In this paper the authors propose a new FEM-FDTD coupling for solving Maxwells equation that connects tetrahedrons in the FEM region directly with the FDTD cells. In the FEM region, the implicit Newmark time-stepping scheme is employed, which allows for local mesh refinement without reduced time step. It is shown that the time discretization is stable up to the Courant limit of the FDTD. Numerical examples confirm that the method is of second-order convergence for field solutions without singular behavior and that it is free of spurious modes.
