Let p(r,t,x) be the age distribution of individuals having age \(r>0\) at time \(t>0\) and spatial location x in \(\Omega\). The evolution of p is governed by the following problem: \[ (1)\quad \partial p(r,t,x)/\partial t+\partial p(r,t,x)/\partial r=-\mu (r)p(r,t,x)+K \Delta p(r,t,x), \] \[ p(r,0,x)=p_ 0(r,x),\quad p(r,t,x)=\int^{r_ m}_{0}\beta (r)p(r,t,x)dr,\quad p(r,t,x)|_{\partial \Omega}=0, \] where it is assumed that \(r_ m\) is the maximum life expectancy of the species, \(0<r<r_ m\), \(\mu\) (r) is the death rate function, \(\beta\) (r) is the fertility function, \(p_ 0(r,x)\) is an initial distribution, K is a positive constant and \(\Delta\) denotes the Laplace operator in \(R^ n.\) Taking \(X=L^ 2((0,r_ m)\times \Omega)\) with the usual norm and defining the operator \(A:X\to X\) by \[ A\Phi (r,x)=-\partial \Phi (r,x)/\partial r-\mu (r)\Phi (r,x)+K \Delta \Phi (r,x),\quad \forall \Phi \in D(A), \] \[ D(A)=\{\Phi (r,x)| \quad \Phi,\quad A\Phi \in X,\quad \Phi |_{\partial \Omega}=0,\quad \Phi (r,x)=\int^{r_ m}_{0}\beta (r)\Phi (r,x)dr\} \] the author writes problem (1) as \[ dp(r,t,x)/dt=Ap(r,t,x),\quad p(r,0,x)=p_ 0(r,x), \] (an evolutionary equation on X). Then he proves that the operator A generates a strongly continuous semigroup on X, constructing the resolvent operator R(\(\lambda\),A) and showing that it is compact. Also the semigroup associated with A is expressed in terms of the eigenelements of the Laplacian. The previous results are extended to the case when an additional internal variable characterizing the population is introduced (the age-size dependent population model). Also a logistic model with diffusion is studied constructing a nonlinear semigroup to describe the evolution of the population.
