Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation and factorization of linear functionals

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: If fA is a unital weak-∗ closed algebra of multiplication operators on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space which has the property , then the cyclic invariant subspaces index a Nevanlinna-Pick family of kernels. This yields an NP interpolation theorem for a wide class of algebras. In particular, it applies to many function spaces over the unit disk including Bergman space. We also show that the multiplier algebra of a complete NP space has , and thus this result applies to all of its subalgebras. A matrix version of this result is also established. It applies, in particular, to all unital weak-∗ closed subalgebras of Hinfty acting on Hardy space or on Bergman space.

Let \(z_i\) be distinct points in \({\mathbb D}\) and \(w_i\in{\mathbb C}\) (\(i=1,\dots,n\)). The classical Nevanlinna-Pick problem \(f(z_i)=w_i\) (\(i=1,\dots,n\)) has a solution \(f\) in the unit ball of \(H^\infty\) if and only if the matrix \(\left[\frac{1-w_i\bar w_j}{1-z_i\bar z_j}\right]\) is nonnegative. In the present paper, a more general interpolation problem of Nevanlinna-Pick type is considered. Let \(H\) be a reproducing kernel Hilbert space of functions on \(X\) with the kernel \(k_\omega(\lambda)\), and let \({\mathfrak A}\) be a dual algebra of multipliers on \(H\). The authors find conditions which ensure that the solvability of the Nevanlinna-Pick problem \(f(z_i)=w_i\) (\(i=1,\dots,n\)) in the unit ball of \({\mathfrak A}\) is equivalent to the nonnegativity of the matrix \(\left[(1-w_i\bar w_j)P_Lk_{z_j},k_{z_i}\right]\) for all cyclic subspaces \(L={\mathfrak A}[h]\), generated by vectors \(h\in{\mathfrak A}\), which do not vanish on \(E=\{z_1,\dots, z_n\}\). Applications to various function spaces are given, including Hardy and Bergman spaces. The multiplier algebra of a complete Nevanlinna-Pick space (see \textit{J. Agler} and \textit{J. E. McCarthy}, ``Complete Nevanlinna-Pick kernels, J. Funct. Anal. 175, No.~1, 111--124 (2000; Zbl 0957.47013)]) is shown to satisfy the assumptions of the main theorem. In particular, an application of the main result to the multiplier algebra of Drury-Arveson space is given. Matrix versions of these results are also discussed.
