On the second largest distance eigenvalue of graphs

Abstract: The distance spectrum of a connected graph is the spectrum of its distance matrix. We characterize those bicyclic graphs and split graphs whose second largest distance eigenvalues belong to the interval $(-infty,-frac12)$. Any such graph is chordal.
