Optimal trace Nash inequality
The author gives lower and upper bounds for the optimal constant \(C=\widetilde A_0(n)\) in the trace Nash inequality \[ \left(\int_{\partial\mathbb R^n_+}u^2 ds\right)^{n\over n-1} \leq C \int_{\mathbb R^n_+}\left|\nabla u\right|^2 dx \left(\int_{\partial\mathbb R^n_+}|u|ds\right)^{2\over n-1} . \] The lower bound is obtained by an estimate involving cylindrically symmetric functions, the upper bound comes from an explicit example. Both bound differ by a factor that depends only on the dimension \(n\) and converges to \(1\) as \(n\to\infty\). On a compact Riemannian manifold \((M,g)\) with boundary, the author considers the inequality \[ \left(\int_{\partial M}u^2 ds_g\right)^{n\over n-1} \leq\left(A \int_M\left|\nabla u\right|_g^2 dv_g +B \int_{\partial M}u^2 ds_g\right) \left(\int_{\partial M}|u|ds_g\right)^{2\over n-1} . \] It is shown that for each \(\varepsilon>0\), there exists \(B_\varepsilon\) such that the inequality above holds for \(A=\widetilde A_0(n)+\varepsilon\) and \(B=B_\varepsilon\). Similar results for manifolds without boundary have been obtained by \textit{O. Druet, E. Hebey} and \textit{M. Vaugon} in [Int. Math. Res. Not. 1999, No. 14, 735-779 (1999; Zbl 0959.58043)] The results of this paper were announced in [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I, Math. 330, No. 6, 485-488 (2000; Zbl 0982.58013)].
