Suppose G is a connected semisimple Lie group with finite center. For each discrete series representation \(\pi_{\Lambda}\), \textit{A. W. Knapp} and \textit{N. R. Wallach} have described an integral operator from a non- unitary principal series representation (induced from a minimal parabolic) onto \(\pi_{\Lambda}\) [Invent. Math. 34, 163-200 (1976; Zbl 0332.22015)]. This paper describes an analogous result with a maximal parabolic (the parabolic determined by a non-compact root which is simple in the \(\Lambda\)-dominant ordering of roots on a compact Cartan, where \(\Lambda\) is the discrete series parameter). The proof uses W. Schmid's realization of \(\pi_{\Lambda}\) in the kernel of a differential operator on functions on G, first establishing the result under regularity conditions \(\Lambda\) and then establishing the general case by Zuckerman's tensoring method. The technique can be extended, with some modifications, to limits of discrete series, and in this case is used to interpret a reducibility theorem of \textit{W. Schmid} [Lect. Notes Math. 587, 196-225 (1977; Zbl 0362.22015)].
