This paper proposes a method of investigation of magnetic surfaces and MHD plasma equilibria in three dimensional toroidal geometry. The method is based on the Hamiltonian formulation of the lines of force and on the expression of the Hamiltonian function in terms of action-angle variables. It is shown that the action corresponds to pressure in the equilibrium problem. The paper also contains considerations regarding repeated canonical transformations which make the action an increasingly better adiabatic invariant.
