Der Artikel stellt in ausführlicher Weise die zwischen 1821 und 1831 erschienenen Arbeiten von Sophie Germain über elastische Oberflächen dar und gibt eine Analyse der darin entwickelten Hypothese derzufolge in jedem Flächenpunkt die elastische Kraft, welche die Einwirkung äußerer Kräfte aufwiegt, proportional zur Summe der beiden lokalen Hauptkrümmungen der Fläche ist. Zur Begründung dieser Vorstellung zieht Sophie Germain ein ``Mischgebiet zwischen Geometrie und Mechanik heran, in dem die Begriffe der mittleren Krümmung und der mittleren Kugel der Fläche und die Oberflächen ihrer Abstandsflächen der Mathematisierung der Flächengestalt dienen. Der Aufsatz zeigt die Grenzen dieser Theorie im Vergleich zur gleichzeitigen Theorie von Gauß (1828) auf, mit der sich Sophie Germain aber nicht genügend befassen konnte.
