Let G be a locally compact group with closed normal subgroup N. Let G act on C *-algebra A via \(\alpha\) forming a C *-dynamical system (A,G,\(\alpha)\). Let \(C\) \(*_ r(A,G,\alpha)\) and \(C\) \(*_ r(A,N,\alpha)\) be the associated reduced C *-crossed products. There exists a coaction \(\delta\) of G/N on \(C\) \(*_ r(A,G,\alpha)\) which is dual to \(\alpha\) ; and viewing \(C\) \(*_ r(G/N)\) as a Kac algebra it has an involution j. The main result of this paper is the following: Theorem. A lower semicontinuous semifinite trace on \(C\) \(*_ r(A,G,\alpha)\) is induced from \(C\) \(*_ r(A,N,\alpha)\) if and only if it is (\(\delta\),j)-invariant under the canonical coaction \(\delta\) of G/N on \(C\) \(*_ r(A,G,\alpha).\) This result may be regarded as an analogue of Takesaki's imprimitivity theorem with respect to traces. The author believes that this result may help resolve Green's conjecture. Namely, all traces on \(C\) \(*_ r(A,G,\alpha)\) are induced from A if, in the dynamical system (A,G,\(\alpha)\), the action of G on Prim(A) is free.
