Let T be an embedded relatively compact submanifold of an s-dimensional Riemannian manifold S of dimension s and denote by \(A^ S_ R(r)\) the (s-1)-dimensional volume of the tube of radius r about R. (r is supposed not to be larger than the distance from R to its nearest focal point.) The main result of this paper is the product formula \[ A^{M\times N}_{P\times Q}(r)=r\int^{\pi /2}_{0}A^ M_ p(r \cos \theta)\quad A^ N_ Q(r \sin \theta)\quad d\theta \] where \(P\times Q\) is the compact product submanifold in \(M\times N\) of \(P\subset M\) and \(Q\subset N\). Several applications are given.
