For a given integer \(r\geq 2\), let \(m=a_kr^k+a_{k-1}r^{k-1}+\ldots+a_0\), \(a_j\in\{0,1,\ldots,r-1\}\) denote the \(r\)-adic expansion of an integer \(m\geq 0\). The author derives a formula for \(\sum_{m\le n}s_r(m)\) \((s_r(m)=a_0+a_1+\ldots+a_k)\), which generalizes one for \(r=2\) proved by \textit{G. F. Clements} and \textit{B. Lindström} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 16, 548--550 (1965; Zbl 0138.01101)].
