The homotopy type of spaces of resultants of bounded multiplicity
Let \(\mathrm{Map}_{d}^{*}(S^{2},\mathbb CP^{N-1})\) denote the space of all based continuous maps \[ f:(S^{2},\infty)\to (\mathbb CP^{N-1},*)\quad f(\infty)=* \] such that \([f]=d\). Here we use the fact that \([f]\in \pi_{2}(\mathbb CP^{N-1})=\mathbb Z\). \noindent Let \(\mathrm{Hol}_{d}^{*}(S^{2},\mathbb C\mathrm{P}^{N-1})\) denote the subspace of \(\mathrm{Map}_{d}^{*}(S^{2},\mathbb CP^{N-1})\) consisting of all holomorphic maps of degree \(d\). Let \(\mathrm{Poly}_{n}^{d,m}(\mathbb C)\) denote the space of \(m\)-tuples \((f_1 (z), \ldots , f_m (z)) \in \mathbb C[z]^m \) of monic polynomials of the same degree \(d\) with no common root in \(\mathbb C\) of multiplicity \(n\) or greater and let \(i_{n}^{d,m}:\mathrm{Poly}_{n}^{d,m}\to\Omega^2_d\mathbb C\mathrm{P}^{mn-1}\simeq \Omega^2 S^{2mn-1}\) denote the natural map defined by \[ i_{n}^{d,m}(f_1 (z), \ldots, f_m (z))(\alpha)= \begin{cases} [(f_1 (\alpha): \ldots: f_m (\alpha))]\quad \text{ if } \alpha\in\mathbb C\\ [ (1: 1:\ldots : 1)] \,\,\text{ if } \alpha=\infty\end{cases}\tag{1} \] The aim of the paper under review is to investigate the homotopy type of the space \(\mathrm{Poly}_{n}^{d,m}(\mathbb C)\) and to generalize some well-known results in the literature. The authors show the following main results: Theorem 1.8: Let \(m\) and \(n\) be be positive integers. If \(mn \geq 3\), the natural map \(i_{n}^{d,m}\) is a homotopy equivalence through dimension \((2mn-3)\Big(\lfloor\frac{d}{n}\rfloor+1\Big)-1\). Theorem 1.10: Let \(m\) and \(n\) be be positive integers with \((m,n )\neq (1,1)\), then there is a stable homotopy equivalence \[ \mathrm{Poly}_{n}^{d,m}\simeq_s \bigvee_{k=1}^{\lfloor\frac{d}{n}\rfloor}\Sigma^{2(mn-2)k}D_{k}. \] Theorem 1.11: Let \(m\) and \(n\) be be positive integers. If \(mn \geq 3\), then there is a homotopy equivalence \[ \mathrm{Poly}_{n}^{d,m}\simeq \mathrm{Hol}_{\lfloor\frac{d}{n}\rfloor}^{*}(S^{2},\mathbb CP^{mn-1}). \]
