Abstract: We give a lower bound for the numerical index of the real space Lp(mu) showing, in particular, that it is non-zero for peq2. In other words, it is shown that for every bounded linear operator T on the real space Lp(mu), one has sup{Bigl|int |x|^{p-1}sign(x) T x dmu Bigr| : xin L_p(mu), |x|=1} geq frac{M_p}{12e}|T| where Mp=maxtin[0,1]frac|tp1t|1+tp>0 for every peq2. It is also shown that for every bounded linear operator T on the real space Lp(mu), one has sup{int |x|^{p-1}|Tx| dmu : xin L_p(mu), |x|=1} geq frac{1}{2e}|T|.
