Minimal threefolds of small slope and the Noether inequality for canonically polarized threefolds

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: 1) We give a 3-dimensional analogue of M. Noether's inequality for canonically polarized threefolds: K3ge2(2pg−5)/3. This inequality is sharp by known examples of M. Kobayashi. 2) Given a minimal 3-fold X of general type with canonical singularities, if K3<(3pg−5)/2, we show that X must be birationally fibred by curves of genus 2.

The author proves the Noether type inequality \(K^3_X \geq {2\over 3}(p_g(X)-5)\) for a smooth threefold \(X\) with ample canonical class. Some cases were proved in a previous paper [\textit{M. Chen}, J. Math. Soc. Japan 56, No.4 1131--1155 (2004; Zbl 1079.14045)]; here the author studies the remaining case, when \(X\) is canonically fibred by surfaces of general type with \((c_1^2, p_g) =(1,2)\). The proof is based on the study of the bicanonical map. Moreover minimal threefolds not satisfying other Noether type inequalities are classified.
