[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] This collection is of major value for theoretical physicists who would like to find a non-technical (e.g. padagogically descriptive) access to both the origins (of) and the current trends in the domain of non- equilibrium statistical physics. The general perspective is provided in contributions by J. L. Lebowitz, E. G. D. Cohen, N. G. van Kampen, P. Mazur, G. Ahlers, also with an explicit reference to the last 25 years. Some current topics are addressed, in the reamining 25 articles, with the subject matter sample: slow non-equilibrium dynamics, fluctuations, chaos in Lorentz gas, spin glasses, polymers and their growth, liquid crystals, growth models and kinetics, dense and simple fluids, noise and phase transitions. It can be recommended for graduate students seeking a deeper statistical physics background.
