Abstract: Two non-empty sets of a metric space are called parallel if for any points and . Answering a question posed on Mathoverflow, we prove that for a cover of a metrizable space the following conditions are equivalent: (i) the topology of is generated by a metric such that any two sets are parallel; (ii) the cover is disjoint, lower semicontinuous and upper semicontinuous.
