Abstract: Let Gamman(p) be the level-p principal congruence subgroup of extSLn(mathbbZ). Borel-Serre proved that the cohomology of Gamman(p) vanishes above degree . We study the cohomology in this top degree . Let mathcalTn(mathbbQ) denote the Tits building of extSLn(mathbbQ). Lee-Szczarba conjectured that is isomorphic to widetildeHnβˆ’2(mathcalTn(mathbbQ)/Gamman(p)) and proved that this holds for p=3. We partially prove and partially disprove this conjecture by showing that a natural map is always surjective, but is only injective for pleq5. In particular, we completely calculate and improve known lower bounds for the ranks of for pgeq5.
