Abstract: The projection constant Pi(E):=Pi(E,ellinfty) of a finite-dimensional Banach space Esubsetellinfty is by definition the smallest norm of a linear projection of ellinfty onto E. Fix ngeq1 and denote by Pin the maximal value of Pi(cdot) amongst n-dimensional real Banach spaces. We prove for every varepsilon>0 that there exist an integer dgeq1 and an n-dimensional subspace Esubsetell1d such that PinleqPi(E,ell1d)+2varepsilon and the orthogonal projection Pcolonell1doE is almost minimal in the sense that lVertPVertleqPi(E,ell1d)+varepsilon. As a consequence of our main result, we obtain a formula relating Pin to smallest absolute value row-sums of orthogonal projection matrices of rank n.
