Abstract: We establish for 2leklen−1 the strict concavity of the function fk(lambda)=log(sigmak(lambda)) on a subset of the positive cone Gamman=lambda=(lambda1,lambda2,cdots,lambdan)inmathbbRn;lambdaj>0,j=1,cdots,n where sigmak(lambda) is the basic symmetric polynomial of degree k, 2leqkleqn. Then we apply the result to study the so-called d−concavity of the k−Hessian type function Fk(R)=logleft(Sk(R)ight), where Sk(R)=sigmak(lambda(R)),lambda(R)=left(lambda1,lambda2,cdots,lambdanight)inmathbbCn is eigenvalue-vector of RinmathbbRnimesn, The d−concavity will be used in our next paper to study the existence of admissible solutions to the Dirichlet problem for the augmented nonsymmetric k−Hessian type equations.
