Abstract: A body mathscrB is started from rest by translational motion in an otherwise quiescent Navier-Stokes liquid filling the whole space. We show, for small data, that if after some time mathscrB reaches a spinless oscillatory motion of period calT, the liquid will eventually execute also a time periodic motion with same period calT. This problem is a suitable generalization of the famous Finn's starting problem for steady-states, to the case of time-periodic motions

The paper deals with a modification of the Finn ``starting problem for steady waves. Here, a rigid body \(\mathcal B\) is plunged in \(\mathbb R^3\) filled with a quiescent viscous incompressible fluid. At a moment \(\mathcal B\) is smoothly set into a periodic motion with velocity \(\xi\) being a \(\mathcal T\) periodic function of average \(0\). One expects that the fluid eventually reach a time periodic flow of (also) period \(\mathcal T\). The main result is that this holds true under a smallness condition for \(\xi\), expressed in a suitable functional norm. Moreover, regularity properties of the flow are studied, and decay rates to the periodic flow as time goes to infinity are given.
