Abstract: We study the depth properties of certain direct image sheaves on normal varieties. Let be a proper morphism of relative dimension from a smooth variety onto a normal variety such that the preimage of the singular locus of is a divisor. We show that for any integer , the higher direct image modulo the torsion subsheaf is , provided that is sufficiently large. In case is birational, we give criteria on for the direct image to coincide with . We also introduce an index measuring the singularities of normal varieties.
