Abstract: Let Omega be a bounded, smooth domain of mathbbRN, Ngeq1. For each p>N we study the optimal function s=sp in the pointwise inequality [ leftvert v(x) ightvert leq s(x)leftVert abla v ightVert _{L^{p}(Omega)},quadforall,(x,v)inoverline{Omega} imes W_{0}% ^{1,p}(Omega). ] We show that spinC00,1(N/p)(overlineOmega) and that sp converges pointwise to the distance function to the boundary, as pightarrowinfty. Moreover, we prove that if Omega is convex, then sp is concave and has a unique maximum point.
