Abstract: Let be a deeply embedded, equicharacteristic, Artinian Gorenstein local ring. We prove that if is a non-Gorenstein quotient of of small colength, then every totally reflexive -module is free. Indeed, the second syzygy of the canonical module of has a direct summand which is a test module for freeness over in the sense that if , for some finitely generated -module , then is free.
