A geometry characteristic of Banach spaces with c^1-norm
From MaRDI portal
Abstract: Let be a Banach space with the -norm in and In this paper, a geometry characteristic for is presented by using a geometrical construct of That is, the following theorem holds : the norm of is of in if and only if is a -submanifold of with The theorem is very clear, however, its proof is non-trivial, which shows an intrinsic connection between the continuous differentiability of the norm in and differential structure of
The main theorem of the paper under review establishes that the norm of a Banach space \(E\) is \(C^{1}\) in \(E \setminus \{0\}\) if and only if its unit sphere \(S\) is a \(C^{1}\)-submanifold of \(E\) with \(\operatorname{codim}S=1\).
