Abstract: Let cklinW2,infty(mathbbRd,mathbbC) for all k,lin1,ldots,d. We consider the divergence form operator A=sumk,l=1dpartiall(ckl,partialk)in L2(mathbbRd) when the coefficient matrix satisfies (C(x),xi,xi)inSigmaheta for all xinmathbbRd and xiinmathbbCd, where Sigmaheta be the sector with vertex 0 and semi-angle heta in the complex plane. We show that for all p in a suitable interval the contraction semigroup generated by A extends consistently to a contraction semigroup on Lp(mathbbRd). For those values of p we present a condition on the coefficients such that the space Ccinfty(mathbbRd) of test functions is a core for the generator on Lp(mathbbRd). We also examine the operator A separately in the more special Hilbert space L2(mathbbRd) setting and provide more sufficient conditions such that Ccinfty(mathbbRd) is a core.
