Abstract: We prove the following theorem. Let be a discrete field, and be independent identically distributed random variables with values in and distribution . The random variables and are independent if and only if is an idempotent distribution. A similar result is also proved in the case when and are independent identically distributed random variables with values in the field of -adic numbers , where , assuming that the distribution has a continuous density.
