Generalisation and improvement of two series inequalities
The main result of the paper reads as follows: \[ \left|\sum_{n\in\mathbb{Z}}\Delta^ kx_ n\overline{\Delta^ ky_ n}\right|^ 2\leq \left(\sum_{n\in\mathbb{Z}}| x_ n|^ 2\right)\left(\sum_{n\in\mathbb{Z}}|\Delta^{2k}y_ n|^ 2\right),\quad k\in\mathbb{N}, \] for all complex sequences \(\{x_ n\}\), \(\{y_ n\}\in l^ 2\); equality occurs if and only if \(x_ n=0\) or \(y_ n=0\) or \(x_ n=\lambda y_ n\) for all \(n\in\mathbb{Z}\) and some \(\lambda\in\mathbb{C}\). The choice \(\{x_ n\}=\{y_ n\}\) and \(k=1\) yields the result of \textit{E. T. Copson} [Proc. R. Soc. Edinb., Sect. A 83, 109- 114 (1979; Zbl 0413.26007)].
