Abstract: Let Gamma be a simple graph of size m and degree sequence delta1gedelta2ge...gedeltan. Let calL(Gamma) denotes the line graph of Gamma. The aim of this paper is to study mathematical properties of the alliance number, a(calL(Gamma), and the global alliance number, gammaa(calL(Gamma)), of the line graph of a simple graph. We show that lceilfracdeltan+deltan−1−12ceillea(calL(Gamma))ledelta1. In particular, if Gamma is a delta-regular graph (delta>0), then a(calL(Gamma))=delta, and if Gamma is a (delta1,delta2)-semiregular bipartite graph, then a(calL(Gamma))=lceilfracdelta1+delta2−12ceil. As a consequence of the study we compare a(calL(Gamma)) and a(Gamma), and we characterize the graphs having a(calL(Gamma))<4. Moreover, we show that the global-connected alliance number of calL(Gamma) is bounded by gammaca(calL(Gamma))gelceilsqrtD(Gamma)+m−1−1ceil, where D(Gamma) denotes the diameter of Gamma, and we show that the global alliance number of calL(Gamma) is bounded by gammaa(calL(Gamma))geqlceilfrac2mdelta1+delta2+1ceil. The case of strong alliances is studied by analogy.
