Abstract: If mathcalH is a Hilbert space, mathcalSsubseteqmathcalH is a closed subspace of mathcalH, and A is a positive bounded linear operator on mathcalH, the spectral shorted operator ho(mathcalS,A) is defined as the infimum of the sequence Sigma(mathcalS,An)1/n, where Sigma(mathcalS,B) denotes the shorted operator of B to mathcalS. We characterize the left spectral resolution of ho(mathcalS,A) and show several properties of this operator, particularly in the case that dimmathcalS=1. We use these results to generalize the concept of Kolmogorov complexity for the infinite dimesional case and for non invertible operators.
