Review text

This is the manuscript of a lecture given at the Mathematische Gesellschaft Hamburg in January 2000. It gives a very readable overview on wavelets for a broad audience, summarizing the essential basics from the well-known book \textit{Ten lectures on wavelets} by \textit{I. Daubechies} (1992; Zbl 0776.42018) and other introductory literature.
