Abstract: The first law of black hole mechanics is derived from the Einstein-Maxwell (EM) Lagrangian by comparing two infinitesimally nearby stationary black holes. With similar arguments, the first law of black hole mechanics in Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) theory is also derived.
