Abstract: Bayer-Stillman showed that reg(I)=reg(ginau(I)) when au is the graded reverse lexicographic order. We show that the reverse lexicographic order is the unique monomial order au satisfying reg(I)=reg(ginau(I)) for all ideals I. We also show that if ginau1(I)=ginau2(I) for all I, then au1=au2.
