R-matrix knot invariants and triangulations

Abstract: The construction of quantum knot invariants from solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation (R-matrices) is reviewed with the emphasis on a class of R-matrices admitting an interpretation in intrinsically three-dimensional terms.
