Abstract: We estimate the dimension of the variety of homomorphisms from $Gamma$ to $SO(p,q)$ with Zariski dense image, where $Gamma$ is a Fuchsian group, and $SO(p,q)$ is the indefinite special orthogonal group with signature $(p,q)$.
