Abstract: We examine the location of the eigenvalues of the generator G of a semi-group V(t)=etG,:tgeq0, related to the wave equation in an unbounded domain OmegasubsetmathbbRd with dissipative boundary condition partialuugamma(x)partialtu=0 on Gamma=partialOmega. We study two cases: (A)::0<gamma(x)<1,:forallxinGamma and (B)::1<gamma(x),:forallxinGamma. We prove that for every 0<epsilonll1, the eigenvalues of G in the case (A) lie in the region Lambdaepsilon=zinmathbbC::|Rez|leqCepsilon(|Imz|frac12+epsilon+1),:Rez<0, while in the case (B) for every 0<epsilonll1 and every NinmathbbN the eigenvalues lie in LambdaepsiloncupmathcalRN, where mathcalRN=zinmathbbC::|Imz|leqCN(|Rez|+1)N,:Rez<0.
